What is there to do in a desert?
The surroundings of San Pedro de Atacama are much more than that. Geysers, volcanoes, canyons, salt flats, wetlands, petroglyphs, giant cacti, archaeological sites and a myriad of unique fauna, all at more than 2,500 meters of altitude. In addition, a rich culture: the first "llama caravans" crossed this desert 3,000 years ago, connecting the rich Amazon jungle at the heart of South America with the Pacific Ocean and the great cities of the world.
At Awasi we assign one 4x4 vehicle and a private guide to each room to adapt each activity to your personal preferences. This way, you can define your itinerary with your guide when you arrive at the hotel, without having to adapt to groups or fixed schedules. Your plan will depend solely on your preferences, weather, and -most importantly in Atacama- acclimatization to altitude! Our lodge is located at over 2,500 meters above sea level and some excursions take place at over 5,000 meters, so it is important to take it easy for the first two or three days.
Each day you can choose between:
- One full day excursion with lunch included (between ca. 5 and 7 hours)
- Two half-day excursions (between 2 and 4 hours approx.), Returning to Awasi for lunch between both excursions.

Important notice: Most of our activities are carried out in National Parks or private estates, which have regulations of their own and are independent to Awasi. Due to COVID-19 related restrictions, the access to said parks and attractions could be restricted and may change on short notice. Please ask your Reservations Executive about the currently available excursions and bear in mind these could suffer unexpected changes.
